Inuyasha, the title character, literally means dog demon. He wears an attractive red kimono, Robe of the Fire Rat which is stronger than any armor. He has long silvery hair and cute dog ears at the top of his head, which everybody feels an irrepressable urge to squeeze.

Inuyasha is a half dog demon, his father being a very powerful dog demon and his mother a mortal woman. This caused him to be greatly despised by other demons especially his older full demon brother, Sesshomaru.

To become a full fledged demon, Inuyasha tried numerous times to steal the Shikon Jewel (Shikon no Tama) protected by the powerful priestess Kikyo. Inuyasha was always unsuccessful, and Kikyo and Inuyasha soon fell in love. However, they were made to hate each other by the deceitful demon Naraku.

When Inuyasha invaded the village to steal the Shikon Jewel, Kikyo sealed Inuyasha to a tree and died, having her body cremated with the Shikon Jewel.

500 years later, Higurashi Kagome, a modern day 15 years old school girl travelled back in time to 50 years after the incident and released Inuyasha. Kagome was Kikyo’s reincarnation and had the Shikon Jewel embedded in her body. She accidentally shattered the Shikon Jewel which scattered all over the world when chasing a crow demon who was after it.

The priestess Kaede, Kikyo’s’s younger sister, sent Inuyasha and Kagome on the errand to retrieve the Jewel shards, and along the way, Inuyasha and Kagome fell in love (Inuyasha is old enough to be her great great great great grandfather!)

Inuyasha inherited the Tetsusaiga, his father’s great sword forged from his father’s fang. The powerful Tetsusaiga could slay a hundred demons with a swing, and untouchable by other full fledged demons. That made Sesshomaru, who was hankering after the sword really mad.

Kagome

Kagome (as seen in the anime)

Kagome Higurashi (日暮 かごめ, nichi kure kagome) is one of the main protagonists of the series. Born in modern Japan as the spiritual reincarnation of the priestess Kikyo, Kagome has the Shikon Jewel unknowingly hidden inside her body until 1997, when a demon pulls her into the Bone Eater’s Well and 500 years back through time. They emerge in the Feudal Era about 50 years after Kikyo’s death, where the demon extracts the jewel from Kagome. Kagome takes over the task of protecting the Shikon Jewel from evil influences, but accidentally shatters it into numerous shards that disperse throughout the country. She shares many traits with Kikyo spiritual power, physical appearance, and (according to InuYasha) even scent but does not retain Kikyo’s memories or personality, and is a very different individual.

Biography

Kagome is the heroine of the manga/anime series. Her family lives at an ancient shrine. She is a miko (priestess) and is the reincarnation of Kikyo. In present day Japan, 15-year-old Kagome Higurashi was pulled into the shrines well by the centipede woman and taken to feudal Japan, where she finds a boy with long white hair and strange dog-ears named InuYasha pinned to a tree. When she frees him, he mistakes her for Kikyo, the one who bound him to the tree in the first place. He seeks the Shinkon No Tama, the Jewel of Four Souls, or The Sacred Jewel as some would call it, that Kagome has. When Kagome shatters the jewel with a purifying arrow, it’s shards are spread across Japan and implanted in demons. InuYasha and Kagome set out to find the Jewel Shards to make the Jewel whole again. Naraku is an evil demon who searches for the Jewel Shards for his own purposes. Now, InuYasa and Kagome travel with a monk, Miroku, a Kitsune, Shippo, and a Demon Slayer and her cat, Sango and Kirara, to defeat Naraku and find all the Jewel Shards.

Kagome’s grandpa makes up fake illnesses to excuse Kagome from school to continue her quest with InuYasha, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo in the feudal area. She is often stressed over tests and wants to go back home to study, though InuYasha does want her to stay. This usually causes arguments between InuYasha and Kagome.

The leader of the Wolf Tribe, Kouga, is infatuated with Kagome, and often calls her “his woman

Through their traveling, Kagome begins to develop romantic feelings toward InuYasha (in the anime series she admitted she was in love with him), but usually remains heartbroken because Inuyasha still has feelings for Kikyo, and often goes out to find her. The relationship between InuYasha and Kagome grows more and more through-out the manga/anime series. By the end of the manga however, their love is out in full force as the two are now married.

 Relationships

  • InuYasha - Inuyasha initially was angry about how Kikyo had betrayed him and projected it at Kagome, but eventually he realized that she was not Kikyo and slowly opened his heart as she showed him kindness and compassion. However, their friendship and blossoming love does not stop Kagome from shouting “Sit boy!” when warranted. She is also very jealous and upset when he goes after Kikyo on occasion, totally forgetting about her. At the end of the series, Kagome marries Inuyasha.
  • Shippo - She treats Shippo almost like a little brother or even a surrogate son, bringing him candy from the modern era and forcing InuYasha to “Sit” whenever he bullies Shippo.
  • Miroku - While he is at times a lecherous nuisance, she respects his knowledge and actions and knows that he would gladly give his life for his friends if the need arose for.
  • Koga - Kagome likes Kouga as a friend and trusts him. However his claims that they are in love have caused a strain between her and InuYasha, even though she really isn’t interested in Kouga.
  • Yuka, Eri, and Ayumi - Kagome’s three friends in the modern era, although they tend to be more than a little nosy about Kagome’s “jealous boyfriend” and wonder why she is interested in him.
  • Hojo is one of Kagome’s male classmates who incessantly persues her, and often brings herbal medicines and similar items to treat her “illnesses.” His ancestor, Houjou Akitoki, had such an infatuation with her that he even convinced his wife to change her name to Kagome.
  • Sango is the demon slayer, along the manga/anime you can clearly see that her fondness for each other becomes stronger, and even act like sisters toward each other and also tell each other secrets and what they think, eventually Kagome on the manga says “Sango is my best friend, I will do anything to save her”.

 Attacks

Purification Powers: this power allows Kagome to purify anything she touches. By gathering large amounts of concentrated energy in her right palm, she can direct it at an opponent.

Spiritual Powers: Kagome can pass through barriers, spells, and illusions. Kagome can also sense evil auras and be unaffected by them. It is also revealed that her powers ,to a great extent, are sealed by the Shikon no Tama(the Jewel of Four Souls), so she may have many other powers than these.

Jewel Detecting: this allows Kagome to sense the exact location of the Shikon Jewel shards. Kikyo had this ability as well.

Kyudo: Kagome uses a basic bow as a weapon. If she infuses her power into the bow, she can reflect an enemy’s attack. Her bow has the power to strike evil spirits or the user’s intended target bypassing others, if the opponent should happen to be using a hostage as a shield, the arrow will bypass the hostage and hit the enemy instead.

Sacred Arrow: Kagome can fuse her power into her arrows. This allows the arrows to penetrate demonic forces and purify objects.

Sacred Backlash Wave: This attack is a combination of InuYasha’s Backlash Wave and Kagome’s Sacred Arrow. It consists of Kagome firing one of her Sacred Arrows into the center of InuYasha’s Backlash Wave, creating a very powerful attack.

Kagome Higurashi is one of the main characters of the Inuyasha series.

Kagome was the grand-daughter of the keeper of Higurashi Shrine, a shintō shrine near Tokyo. Unbeknownst to her and her family, Kagome was the reincarnation of Kikyo and the bearer of the Jewel of Four Souls. She would later learn of this and her importance through Kaede, Kikyo’s younger sister.

Meeting Inuyasha

While celebrating her fifteenth birthday, Kagome was pulled into The Bone Eater’s Well by a centipede yōkai, known as the Mistress Centipede, and taken into feudal Japan, specifically the Sengoku period. While wondering around in the forest, Kagome encountered an unconscious half dog demon pinned to a tree. After awakening him by releasing the arrow from his arm, the demon introduced himself as Inuyasha. Inuyasha saved Kagome from Mistress Centipede, killing her shortly after.

The union was cut short after the Jewel of Four Souls was stolen by a demon. In an attempt to rescue the jewel, Kagome unintentionally shattered it and split the jewel into many shards.

Miroku

Miroku with Sango

Miroku (弥勒, Miroku) is a Buddhist monk who travels the countryside performing services such as exorcisms and demon exterminations, although sometimes he deliberately falsifies these to earn comfortable rewards. Miroku can attack enemies with his holy staff and sutra scrolls, but his greatest weapon, the Wind Tunnel embedded in the palm of his hand, is also a hereditary curse originally inflicted by Naraku upon Miroku’s grandfather Miyatsu. The Wind Tunnel sucks in almost anything in its path and is a powerful weapon against demons; however, it grows larger with increasing use, so that Miroku’s grandfather and father were eventually consumed by their own Wind Tunnels. Miroku hopes to break the curse by killing Naraku.

Miroku first meets InuYasha by stealing the Shikon Jewel, causing them to fight one another until Kagome leaps between them. After Miroku explains his situation, InuYasha allows him to join their group as a valuable ally. Miroku’s lechery is a recurrent habit, usually manifesting as shameless flattery, semi-surreptitious groping, and asking random women to bear his child; he learned these bad habits from the monk Mushin who raised him, but he also has the more serious motive of wanting an heir to follow him if he dies without defeating Naraku. At the end of the series, Miroku no longer bears the Wind Tunnel, and marries Sango. They have three children: twin girls and a boy.

Biography

Miroku was raised and trained by his father’s friend named Mushin who became Miroku’s guardian when his father was violently swallowed by the Kazaana.

His grandfather was cursed by Naraku, the chief antagonist of the InuYasha series. In the past, the two fought many times, and each time Naraku appeared to Miroku’s grandfather in a different form. Though Miroku’s grandfather was a powerful monk, he was also a “lecher” (just like his grandson) and Naraku used this to his advantage. Naraku took the form of a beautiful maiden in order to catch Miroku’s grandfather off guard. When Naraku revealed himself, the battle between the two foes began. Whilst battling Naraku, Miroku’s grandfather was pierced though the hand creating the Wind Tunnel. This curse has been passed down from father to son, and thus to Miroku. Miroku is able to control the wind tunnel by sealing it with prayer beads.

Prior to meeting Inuyasha and Kagome, Miroku traveled the countryside performing (as he viewed it) his Buddhist duties towards the people he meets on his Journey. This includes praying for any who ask, comforting the sick and dying, and (his particular specialty) exorcising unwanted spirits and demons (Yokai), sometimes destroying them in the process. These exorcisms should not be confused with the work done by the “ Demon Slayers ” such as Sango.

As a Buddhist monk, one of his main concerns is that the spirit or soul of the individual (even daemons) should “find rest” and pass peacefully into the “next world”. Without this, the spirit is doomed to wander this world, often in a malicious or malevolent form, and further can be taken over by other daemons.

In addition to these duties, Miroku is constantly searching for Naraku, the daemon that cursed his family with the Kazaana (Wind Tunnel); for if he does not find and destroy Naraku, Miroku will be consumed by the curse as his father and grandfather were before him. Near the end of the series, his wind tunnel reaches it’s limit and Naraku plans on having him use it one final time to destroy the demons coming toward them so that way he’ll suffer his father and grandfather’s fates but Naraku is defeated, his Wind Tunnel starts to close. At the end of the series, Miroku no longer bears the Wind Tunnel, and marries Sango. They have three children: twin girls and a boy.

Weapons

  • Wind Tunnel

A curse place upon Miroku’s grandfather by Naraku during a battle, and passed down through all males in Miroku’s family. The curse pierced the palm of the monk and resulted in a hole or void into another dimension which sucks everything into it creating a terrible sucking wind in the process. While Miroku has leveraged this curse into a formidable weapon, the Kazaana is difficult to control. Miroku has learned to seal it with a Buddhist Rosary until he wishes to unleash it’s power, but it slowly grows larger with time and will eventually consume him. By the time of the final battle against Naraku, the Wind Tunnel has grown too large for Miroku to use at his leisure and only had one last use before the void would consume him. As Sesshomaru’s Bakusaiga tears apart the demon from the inside out, the Wind Tunnel’s power begins to fade away and by the time Naraku is reduced to a mere head, the curse has finally been lifted, the tunnel having left Miroku’s hand completely.

In Japan the Shakujou Staff is still used by monks, pilgrims, and practitioners of Shugendou ( a school of Buddhism teaching spiritual practices in the mountains). A yamabushi or mountain priest may use it for magic or exorcism, as does Miroku. In the Shingon and Tendai sects, the Shakujou is used as a ritual object in special ceremonies, much like the Tibetan Dorje

  • Sacred Sutras

these “Jufu Talismans” are strips of paper upon which special prayers have been written and prayed over, imbuing them with spiritual power and energy against specific evil. Each Ofuda has a special prayer, and thus is tailored for a specific purpose such as general protection, good luck, safe travel, removing a ghost or spirit, or sealing off a demon or spirit. Miroku uses them in his work to “exorcise” ghosts and demons from homes and people. Similar Ofuda are used by Kagome’s Grandfather early in the series after Kagome returns from the Feudal era for the first time. Grandpa (a Shinto Priest) attempts to seal off the “Bone Eaters Well” with numerous Ofuda but as we saw from Inuyasha’s arrival, Grandpa’s Ofuda were not strong enough to stop him.

Outfit

Miroku wears a purple two-piece robe typical of a Japanese Buddhist Monk. It appears to be Jikitotsu Susugata . Periodically he appears with leggings, but he always wears woven rice-straw sandals. On occasion he wears a conical rice-straw hat typical to the era.

The robes of most wandering monks are actually quite poor and ragged - often stitched together out of whatever pieces of cloth a person might give them on their travels. Miroku’s robes are quite extravagant and expensive compared to most itinerant monks. However this is consistent with his tendency to loot the wealth of greedy merchants whose homes he rids of demons and ghosts.

  • Miroku’s Rosary:

Miroku carries a string of beads used for Buddhist prayer and invocation. Usually associated with a chant repeating the name of Amida Nyorai. The most common type has 108 beads. The nenju carried by Japanese Buddhist monks were typically made of 112 wooden beads.

Originally rare and made of semi-precious stones, the spread of Buddhism brought wider use of nenju from the Heian Period (8th-12th century) through the Kamakura Period (12th-14th century). By the Warring States era, most poor monks carried wooden beads. The number “108″ (a sacred number in many Buddhist traditions) represents the number of earthly passions and desires that blind and delude us, entrapping us in the Six States of Existence (the wheel of life, the cycle of samsara, the cycle of suffering and reincarnation).

Miroku makes further use of his nenju to seal off the Wind Tunnel in his hand.

  • Miroku’s Tekko:

The arm protectors worn by Miroku and Sango are called Tekko. Miroku wraps the Tekko over the Wind Tunnel, then seals it with his Nenju (rosary).

Miroku is an itinerant monk and colossal pervert. Despite the drubbings he gets from Sango, he’s probably the most powerful member of the “gang”.

First off he’s got the Wind Tunnel (aka Kazaana, 風穴) in his right hand. The Wind Tunnel is the result of a curse placed on his family by Naraku. Miroku’s grandfather, who was also a monk, was one of Naraku’s early enemies. Though Naraku always took a different form, Miroku’s grandfather was able to identify him and fight him to an apparent stalemate. For their last fight however, Naraku adopted the form of a beautiful young maiden. Miroku’s grandfather being lecher as well was distracted by Naraku’s facade long enough for Naraku to pierce his hand and inflict the curse on Miroku’s paternal line. Miraku’s grandfather’s wind tunnel grew each year until it engulfed him, as the wind tunnel in Miroku’s father’s hand. Miroku then inherited the Wind Tunnel himself and the only way to stop it from growing each year until it engulfs him is to kill Naraku. In the mean time, the Wind Tunnel is an insanely powerful weapon. Like a black hole it sucks in anything and everything to be destroyed unless it’s covered by Miroku’s Buddhist Sutra beads. The only thing that seems to have any effect when it’s sucked in are Naraku’s Hell Wasps (Saimyoushou) , which sting and poison Miroku on their way in. Aside from those, he’s sucked in trees, cows, and buildings with no ill effect.

Aside from the Wind Tunnel he has a fairly varied arsenal of priestly powers, including force barriers, super-speed, and the ability to make “bubbles” of invisibility to evil creatures.

And none of that works, he can just hit stuff with his Shakujou (monks’s staff), which is what ends up doing about half the time anyway.

In our first exposure to him we find him exercising a weasel demon from a statue to free a nobleman’s daughter from its influence, only to use that as a cover to clear out the nobleman’s house of treasures. He then laments the low price he got for pawning all that stuff.

Sango

Sango as she appears in both her normal outfit and demon slaying’s outfit.

Sango(珊瑚, Sango) is a demon slayer who hails from a village of professional demon slayers. Naraku wipes out her entire family and village, then causes Sango to blame InuYasha and try to kill him. When the plot fails, Naraku revives Sango’s little brother Kohaku, controlling him as a pawn to manipulate Sango’s emotions and attack the rest of InuYasha’s group. Sango seeks vengeance against Naraku, but her primary goal is to rescue Kohaku from Naraku’s influence and save his life. Of her broad repertoire of tools and tricks for fighting demons, her most powerful weapon is the Hiraikotsu, a massive boomerang made of purified demon bones. She is accompanied by the demon cat Kirara. Sango is often the victim of Miroku’s lecherous tendencies and slaps him for it, but she later confesses her love to him and the two get engaged. After they marry, she allows Kirara to join her brother Kohaku and aid him in his demon slaying.

 Weapon’s

  • Hiraikotsu: Her main weapon is a massive boomerang which is made of the bones of youkai that have been killed.
  • Dagger gauntlet: The dagger is hidden within her sleeve and can be retracted. In one particular episode Sango who is possessed uses this weapon against Miroku, it is this same episodes that he proposes to her.
  • Wakizashi: A short one hand holding sword, some mistake it to be a katana.
  • Yōkai Paralyzing Poisons: A poisonous concoction that paralyzes demons.
  • Numbing Potions: This is mainly used when she wishes not to kill a demon. The poison will numb the demon and she normally masks the poison by baking it into buns or donuts.
  • Chain: The chains are used to constrict her enemies.

 Outfit

  • Sango normally travels wearing a traditional woman’s Kimono of a style called “Kosode“, with a wide woman’s “Obi” to tie it shut. Over this she wears a long skirt, most likely “Mo-bakama“. She completes her outfit with traditional woman’s arm guards and leg guards, and straw sandals.
  • Her Demon-Slayer outfit is most unique…a black skin-tight suit that has a decided mainland flavor, and apparent armor-plates made of demon parts. She carries her Bone-Boomerang and a short sword.

She is the daughter of the chief of Taijiya village; a town that earned it’s living by exterminating demons that attacked other villages and the surrounding countryside. Letting nothing go to waste, the village collected the bones, hides, shells of the demons they defeated to make their weapons and armor, including Sango’s gigantic boomerang Hiraikotsu.

One day a local lord called for the village’s best exterminators to come to his castle and exterminate a demon that had been attacking every night. Sango’s father went, along with Sango, her little brother Kohaku, and two other exterminators. They easily defeat the spider demon, but Sango senses that something isn’t quite right. Sure enough, Naraku, who has been masquerading as young lord Kagewaki, takes control of Kohaku. Kohaku turns on his companions, quickly killing his father and the other two exterminators in the confusion. Kohaku then turns on Sango, but she blocks his kusari-gama - heavy-bladed sickle on the end of a long chain. Sango sees the web attached to Kohaku that’s being used to control him and follows it back to the lord of the castle. She charges the lord in an attempt to free her brother, but Kohaku hits her in the back with his kusari, stopping her charge. Naraku releases his control over Kohaku, who realizing what he’s done runs to help Sango. The lord orders his guards to shoot the two. Kohaku is hit with multiple arrows and falls to the ground. The wounded Sango shields him from further arrows and finally collapses as well.

Just then, Naraku masquerading as Kagewaki kills the lord and says that it wasn’t really his father; it was the spider demon in disguise. He then orders that the demon exterminators are to be properly buried in the castle. Miraculously, Sango survives and digs herself out of her grave. She is found by Naraku/Kagewaki and has her wounds tended. While Sango is recovering, Naraku uses one of his puppets to tell himself that Taijiya village has been wiped out by Inuyasha and the village’s Shikon jewel shards stolen while, making sure that Sango can overhear. Devastated, Sango demands her weapons and armor in order to avenge her family and village. Being the great guy he is, Naraku gives her a Shikon jewel shard so she can fight without feeling pain from her wounds. Not heal them or anything mind you, just blank out the pain.

Despite Inuyasha and the gang’s wishes, Sango attacks and is quickly defeated despite Naraku helping in the form of his wasps. The wasps grab the Shikon jewel shard and beat feet, causing Sango to pass out from pain and blood loss. Kagome tends her wounds and she regains consciousness to find that Inuyasha and the gang had already paid proper respects to the villagers. She learns that Naraku was the one behind the whole thing and she decides to join the group to exact revenge and free Kohaku, who she learns has become one of Naraku’s puppets.

Kikyo

Kikyo (桔梗, Kikyō Kanji Meaning “Bellflower“) was a Miko (巫女, lit. “Shrine Maiden”) from a small Japanese village during the Sengoku Jidai period. During her life, she was a calm and reserved priestess who rigorously defended the village from yōkai who would otherwise wreak havoc on the tiny community. Kikyo serve as a rival with Kagome for InuYasha’s affection.

History

During her youth, Kikyo and Kaede (Her younger Sister) attends Yōkai Taijiya (lit. demon exterminators), sort of a school for priestess. It is there she met Tsubaki (who later became a Dark Priestess). Kikyo’s spiritual power and great purity became well known and thus the Jewel of Four Souls (四魂の玉, Shikon no Tama) was entrusted to her much to Tsubaki’s dismay. It became Kikyo’s destiny to spend her life guarding this Shikon no Tama lest it fall into the wrong hands, for the resulting evil and chaos would wreck the entire country, however, this mean she can’t show any sign of weakness for demons and enemy to get the better of her.

Kikyo spends most of her time killing off demons who tries to steal the Jewel, the only one she let live is InuYasha. She also tends to Onigumo’s wound in a cave, Later on, Kikyo confronts InuYasha and tells him about how she have to hide her real self inorder to protect the jewel and thus InuYasha and Kikyo fell in love. Sometime during this time, Tsubaki attempt to attack Kikyo when her po

wer is low (due to falling in love), however, Kikyo reflect the curse amd sends it right back and order her to leave.

(Anime Only)

Kikyo and InuYasha sailed to an island that only appears 50 years, she was then attacks by an unknown demon and her DNA was stolen in the process.

When InuYasha told Kikyo how he wanted to become human, Kikyo thought to use the Shikon Jewel to turn InuYasha into a full human, however, Onigumo offers his body to the demon and Naraku was born in the process. Naraku struck down Kikyo while disguising as InuYasha and then attack InuYasha as Kikyo. Kikyo who mistaken that InuYasha betrayed her, use her last power and shoot a sacrad arrow to InuYasha and thus killing him (rendering him asleep for eternity). She then order Kaede to burn her body with the Shikon Jewel.

Current Story

Fifty years later an Oni Witch named Urasue stole Kikyo’s bone ash and her body was reborn from clay. However, the body needed Kagome’s soul for it to be animated and brought back completely to life. When finally the lifeless body was infused with Kagome’s soul, Kikyo was revived and her imidiate prirority was to kill InuYasha. She nearly succeeded until Kagome’s body began recalling her soul back and effectively stopped her. Yet Kikyo had managed to retain a part of her soul, and thus escaped into the mist, where she was pursued by InuYasha. Quickly thereafter Kikyo fell off a neareby cliff, presumed dead by the group.

Kikyo is seen alive residing in a small village tending the wounds and curing the sick. She was loved by the children and the villagers respected her, however, a monk tries to send her back to hell as it is revealed that she is not really alive, nor dead, and as a means to remain a part of the world has to absorb the souls of deceased women. In order to achieve this, Kikyo makes use of her soul collecters, or the Shikigami. She was then confronted by the monk, who she quickly kills, and leaves the village. Kikyo laters confronts Kagome and InuYasha and tries to get InuYasha to join her forever as the dead, however, she was stopped by Kagome. Kikyo then leaves with a new goal, which is to die with InuYasha.

Kikyo resides in a temple healing the wounds of soldiers, when men from the palace ask Kikyo to heal their master’s disease. Kikyo went and by time she went to the palace she notice the dark aura and it was then Naraku met her again. Kikyo tried to lose the palace, but couldn’t and thus, Naraku erected a barriers that prevents her Shikigami from accessing which render her useless. Naraku set her up to battle Kagome, however, when Naraku gave her a soul attached with a Shikon Jewel, she strike Naraku puppet and going on her own command. When Kagome arrive, she attacked her and stole all her jewel shards and leaves while laughing at InuYasha as he couldn’t fight a woman he once and still loves. Kikyo went back to the palace and break the barrier around it, she gave Naraku the shards and revealed to him that she knows that she’s a half demon and departs. Kikyo now finally feel free from what she wasn’t able to be before and also states that once Naraku gain all the shards, she’ll kill him.

Kikyo appeared to warn Tsubaki about kagome’s powers and leaves shortly afterwards. She reappeared again feeling sorry for Tsubaki and starts to realise her being the same.

When Naraku confronts Kikyo again and threaten to kill her, she annonced that he couldn’t kill her as Naraku still has the heart of Onigumo and Onigumo loves her. Due to this, Naraku sent a giant Shikigami to steal the souls that Kikyo uses inorder to kill her, however, Kikyo manage to escape and InuYasha manage to save her.

Throughout the story, Kikyo would always use Onigumo as an excuse for Naraku not willing to kill her face to face, however, when Naraku got rid of his heart he confronts Kikyo and tries to kill her, but stopped after he finds that he is weaker without his heart.

Later, after a failed attempt by Naraku to kill her at Mt. Hakurei after creating a new body, she is seen with two Shikigami that have human form: Kochou and Asuka.

Kikyo is finally killed by Naraku when she blocks an attack meant for Kohaku. She dies in InuYasha’s arm and her souls returns back to Kagome.

Re-incarnation in Kagome

Kagome Higurashi, the main protagonist of Inuyasha and a miko just like Kikyo, is the modern reincarnation of Kikyo’s spirit. The Tree of Ages is in her backyard, as is the Bone-eater’s Well, which becomes the portal between her time and the Sengoku period (Feudal Era of Japan) approximately 500 years ago. She is able to free Inuyasha from the tree to which he had been bound by Kikyo, has the power to purify the Shikon no Tama and fires sacred arrows from her bow.

She unwillingly helps revive Kikyo into human form when an ogress pulls out a small part of her soul, filled with the memories and quirks of Kikyo that still lingered inside Kagome.

Personality

At first after her resurrection, she is spiteful and angry towards both Inuyasha and Kagome. She tries to kill InuYasha several times, and once, Kagome; however, after learning the truth behind the circumstances of her death, her assaults substantially decreases and focuses her attention to Naraku. She possessed a condescending personality in the beginning, as shown when she laughed at InuYasha who was unable attack her due to his lingering feelings toward her, and Naraku, containing the heart of Onigumo who loves Kikyo. She continues to act independently, unwilling to accept assistance from others. She willingly remains in solitude, containing a more solemn and cold outer shell. Despite her cold exterior, she evidently is willing to save others even if it withers her life away, as long as it is possible. This is shown in chapter 448 when she purifies the Naraku’s shouki from Miroku’s body despite her body being deteriorated by Naraku’s shouki as well. As well as in chapter 449 she expresses her reassurance to Kagome that she would save Kohaku, if there is an alternative method. Eventually, she returns back to her post-death state of compassion and kindness, protecting others and eventually dying in Inuyasha’s arms after protecting Kohaku from an attack by Naraku. Kikyo is confident in her abilities and is intellegent.

Kikyo’s Outfit

Manga Left, Anime Right

Kikyo is clearly wearing the tradional dress of a Miko, which has remained essentially unchanged to this day, except for the lack of the archaic slit-shoulder seam.

  • Jacket

Kikyo wears a white jacket with sode-kukuri (cords) through the sleeves and the open shoulders similar to Inuyasha’s and Jaken’s. Strings called muna-himo are attached to each lapel, and are tied in front to keep the garment closed.

  • Kosode

Kosode (literally: “little sleeve”) were originally worn as underwear but by the Kamakura era, became accepted outer layer garments; more dressy with less sculpted sleeves. Kosode of the Heian and Kamakura Periods were always white. Kikyo’s kosode would be very much like a modern Kendo or Naginata Keikogi, with the sleeve fitting somewhat closely like a modern loose shirt, and extending to slightly past the wrist.

The slits in the side of the hakama show the white kosode, and the openings at the sleeves and shoulders of the hitoe (jacket) show it as well. This is a deliberate fashion effect.

  • Hakama

Kikyo wears bright red hakama, which include the small board at the lower back.

  • Tabi

On her feet, Kikyo wears common tabi (socks) and rice straw sandals.

  • Obi

Kikyo wears a red Obi, or belt, over the other garments.

Kikyo’s Attacks and Ability

Kikyo carries a traditional red Saigu-Yumi (literally Priestess Bow) and a quiver of Hamaya ( “evil-destroying arrow” or “demon-breaking arrow”) fletched with white feathers. She has the ability to imbue each arrow with great spiritual power that has destroyed, disabled or sealed any Yokai or other evil to date.* Sacrad Arrow: Kikyo shoots out a sacrad arrow that can easily destroy demon and break barriers

  • Arrow: Kikyo shoots out a normal arrow
  • Spiritual Powers: Kikyo has the power to break seals, barriers, spells, etc
  • Cut: Kikyo is shown to have a high level of strength as she was able to just use her hand to slice the Naraku’s puppet in half with ease.
  • Reflect Curse: Kikyo reflects any incoming curse with a bow.
  • Shikigami Control: Kikyo controls Shikigami, a demon which collects soul for her to use, she’s able to fly away with them.
